It seems like the address suffix is not being validated?

Using the address:
10 S Dearborn Road
Chicago, IL 60670

The return is:
10 S Dearborn Rd
Chicago, IL 60603

If I use "10 S Dearborn Avenue", "10 S Dearborn Plaza", "10 S Dearborn Terrace" or just "10 S Dearborn" they all return whatever suffix was included. The GeoCode information is the same for all of them so it appears to all be the same actual location.

The parsed suffix is abbreviated correctly so it does pick it up but it appears to not actually validate it?

The correct address is "10 S Dearborn St".

Thanks,
Rick

Hi Rick,

The zipcode of 60670 is what's called a "Unique Zipcode". A unique zip is assoicated or assigned to a school, church, business etc. No matter what suffix (or address) you pass, CASS requires that we standardize the address passed, and give a plus 4 of 0001. This is why no matter what suffix is submitted, the object will standardize it without changing it. Only with unique zips will this happen. Below is a link to the www.usps.com website showing zip 60670 as a unique. You can also use the address validation tool in which they will code the address the same way as our object.

Let me know if you have any questions.

I'm unclear about what happened here. If I understand correctly, since zip code 60670 is a unique zip code, when the street address was processed only standardization rules were applied, i.e., Road was standardized to Rd and no other modification was made to street address. That makes sense to me, but what I don't understand is why the zip code was then changed to 60603. Can you provide a bit more details?

Thank you,
Terri

Hi Teri,

Good question. It's been a while since I investigated this address but I took a look at it again and here is why the zipcode changes. This address is actually a LACS address. A LACS address is..

1. A 911 emergency system has been implemented to convert rural-style Addresses to city-style addresses
2. A street address has been renamed or renumbered

Now if an address passed is labeled as LACS (according to USPS), then the Address, city, and state are used to find that match regardless if the Zipcode is unique or not. So the address actually falls in zipcode 60603 and since it is LACS the zipcode was not a factor. Also the actual suffix is "St" not "Road" or "Rd".

Now if this address was not marked as LACS and a match could not be found with the address, city and state then the unique zipcode would be used.

I'm not sure if this was the case back in 09 but you have a valid question and I should have elaborated more on my first post.
